An immersive story for children 18 months and older, told with few words and lots of pictures. Two characters set out to discover what’s hiding under the leaf, and the audience, seated on the floor under small, illuminated tents, joins them on their journey.
The audience sits on fur rugs under small, illuminated tents. The two characters search for what’s hidden beneath the leaf. The scale of things is called into question: the houses are as small as snowflakes, and the leaf is as big as a cloud. Each scene is full of poetry and brings the leaf to life through song, dance, or music—a sensory and poetic journey designed to spark the imagination of very young children without ever overwhelming them.
The minimalist and evocative set design by Ariane Voineau and Josué Beaucage facilitates both transportation and setup as well as the audience’s experience. Here, the human scale of the production—two artists, an intimate space, a flexible setup—is itself an artistic quality. The work invites children to take the time to observe the world around them from a multitude of perspectives, as their connection to live performance develops gently.
Created in 2019, Little Big Leaf has been on an active and continuous tour ever since, in Quebec, Canada, and Europe.
