Margie Gillis Dance Foundation

Founded in 1981, the Margie Gillis Dance Foundation preserves and expands the body of work of Margie Gillis, whose repertoire now includes more than 150 pieces, including solos, duets, and group works. The Foundation explores the human condition through a choreographic language that draws on the richness of nature and the depth of human inner life, with a particular focus on the emotional connections that movement can create between a performer’s body and an audience.

Her works have been presented on major international stages for the past fifty years, in Canada, the United States, Europe, Asia, and Latin America. The Foundation also supports the transmission of Margie Gillis’s choreographic language through workshops, training programs, and residencies offered to performers of all generations.

Margie Gillis

Internationally renowned dancer and choreographer Margie Gillis began presenting her first solo works in 1974. Bucking the trends of the time, she forged a deeply personal choreographic language, grounded in an exceptional physical and emotional presence and a rare ability to connect with audiences who are not necessarily familiar with dance.

Her extensive repertoire, including her famous solos, has allowed her to captivate audiences on every continent through her interpretation of the diverse facets of the human soul. She has collaborated with Leonard Cohen, whose lyrics have accompanied several of her works. Her career has earned her numerous honors, including the Order of Canada, the National Order of Quebec, and an honorary doctorate from Concordia University.

With a career spanning more than fifty years, Margie Gillis continues to create, teach, and share her art with remarkable consistency and generosity. Her latest work, L’âme du poète, pays tribute to Gilles Vigneault in a piece for nine performers—a collaboration between two artists whose friendship and artistic partnership have endured for decades.
