Compagnie Virginie Brunelle

Founded in 2009, the Virginie Brunelle Company has developed a choreographic approach that places the human being at the heart of the creative process. Through a physically demanding yet sensitive style of movement, Virginie Brunelle seeks to reveal what lies within human beings in all their complexity: their strength, their vulnerabilities, their contradictions, and their fundamental need for others.

Her work is grounded in a quest for authenticity of the body, viewed as a place of truth capable of making visible the emotions, tensions, and dynamics that shape human relationships. Relationships form the central theme of her work: the bonds that unite us, transform us, sustain us, or drive us apart.

Music plays a central role in her creative process, enriching the dramaturgy and the experience of her works. Since its founding, the company has created and presented more than a dozen productions in Quebec, across Canada, and internationally, developing a repertoire recognized for its emotional intensity and its deep commitment to the human experience.

*Fables* (2022), a work for ten performers and a pianist, propelled her to the prestigious 2025 Venice Biennale following its premiere in Lugano. In January 2025, she returned to Stuttgart to create *High Moon* with the Gauthier Dance Juniors. In the fall of 2025, she presented *Sans quoi nous crèverons* in several cities across Quebec, before a Montreal premiere in April 2026 at Danse Danse.

In 2026, she created *Well, here we are*, commissioned by Dominique Dumais for the Mainfranken Theater in Würzburg, featuring twelve performers, a chamber orchestra, and a choir of twenty-five singers. At the same time, she continues her collaboration with Jean-Simon Traversy on a new co-directed production scheduled for 2027 at Duceppe, in co-production with Le Trident de Québec.Following her degree in dance from UQÀM in 2008, Virginie Brunelle quickly made a name for herself in the Montreal dance scene with her early works, which had already won awards. It was with Foutrement (2011, CAM Touring Program Audience Award) and Complexe des genres (2012, Aarhus International Choreographic Competition Award) that she established her signature style: a visceral form of dance, both raw and sensitive, that has captivated audiences in both Canada and Europe.

She continued her exploration of human relationships through PLOMB (2014) and À la douleur que j’ai (2016), before creating Les corps avalés with the Molinari Quartet, a powerful epic that premiered at Danse Danse. In 2018, Éric Gauthier invited her to create Beating for the Gauthier Dance Theaterhaus Stuttgart, a collaboration that further established her work within the European dance scene. Her choreographic vision also extends to film with Réminiscences, a short film that has won multiple awards at international festivals, and her co-direction of Royal at Duceppe, alongside Jean-Simon Traversy, earned her the Best Direction Award from the Quebec Association of Theater Critics.
