Four circus artists, a collection of everyday objects, and 18 songs composed by Zach Condon (Beirut). Kompani Giraff gives form to what fades away: extinct animals, ruined buildings, memories without witnesses, in a meditation on the impermanence of a beauty that takes the audience by surprise.
A Study of Losses plunges into the heart of a vast sea of disappearances. Not to mourn it, but to hold it, to turn it over, to scrutinize every contour. On stage, familiar objects awaken in an atmospheric and twisted landscape. Through contemporary magic, circus arts, and object manipulation, the Swedish company gives form to absence: the objects carry memories, dreams, and phantom pains, and it is in this crumbling that something strange and unsettling takes shape.
The soundtrack, composed specifically for this production by Zach Condon, the Beirut we know, forms the sonic and emotional architecture of the entire piece. Eighteen original songs permeate the work like layers of memory, sometimes performed live, sometimes broadcast, enveloping the stage in an atmosphere that blends nostalgia and wonder.
Playful, poetic and stunningly beautiful, A Study of Losses pushes the boundaries of contemporary circus to create something rarer: a proposition where gravity and lightness stand together, without ever contradicting each other.
